Bob Jacobs - Ray Bradbury's Dark Carnival (1969)

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

Recorded Aug. 14, 1969 at Fidelity Recording Studios in Hollywood

Lyrics: Bob Jacobs
Music: Dennis Pfister, Larry Delinger, Bob Jacobs
Arranger: Hal Brooks
Additional arrangements: Larry Delinger, Bob Jacobs
Musicians: The Autumn People
Recording Engineer: Randy Hauck
Producer: Bob Jacobs

"This record is the result of a thank-you note which Bob Jacobs sent me from Europe in the form of the tune October Country. I liked it so well that Bob wrote an entire album around various stories in my book, in less than a month. Now, some while late, I am happy to find that Tower Records is releasing this album under the title of Dark Carnival. And I am happy for two reasons. First, it means that Bob Jacobs, a fine writer and performer, is on his way. Second, I am pleased that this young man has reached out to capture my stories in song. I have no convenient tag or label to pin on the kind of music you will find in this collection. Just as each of my stories in October Country lived their own particular lives and truths in their own particular way, the songs based on these stories range from folk ballad to hard rock and the emotions move from light to dark, from humor to terror. Bob Jacobs is even harder to label. He writes poems, songs, stories, sings, acts, and directs, but above all, even amidst such songs of mystery and fright as these is, like myself, optimistic about Mankind's future. In any even, here he is, for you to judge on your own. I hope he scares you. I hope he delights you." - Ray Bradbury, liner notes

"Desoriented [sic] urban college dorm hippie-folk album with some good and strange tracks like "Angels in her walk" that go deep, and a pretty interesting LP all over. Actually a various artists college project LP from NYC but usually referred to only as "Tool Shed"." - [PL], Acid Archives

John Terlazzo - Honour Among Thieves (1983)

Monday, July 27, 2009

"Dark loner poet folk/rock. Very heavy Leonard Cohen influence, but makes LC seem cheerful by comparison. Even the one song that is upbeat, almost good-timey, has a dark undertone. Terlazzo is accompanied on many tracks by a beautiful haunting female backing vocal which is often wordless. Several tracks have fine electric guitar leads and solos. The poetic nature of his writing rather stark and often “esoteric” lyric images, brought out well by his rather limited baritone voice. I rate this at the top of the loner folkie heap."
