San Francisco (1968) + The End (1953)

Thursday, January 20, 2011

A double-feature of experimental short films shot in San Francisco:

San Francisco (Anthony Stern, 1968) 15 min.
The End (Christopher Maclaine, 1953) 34 min.

Two hallucinatory looks at the city categorized once by an aging punk I spoke to as the place "where freaks go to die." Stern's perspective is certainly freakish, but in the romanticized manner of an outsider, Stern being a native Englishman, it takes on the feel of a nostalgic color-wheel comprised of all the strange sights and pretty lights a visitor would find attractive. The late-night hippie séances and swirled, expressionistic woods sequences are contrasted with rain-blurred shots of the Golden Gate Bridge and the bustle of Chinatown. The soundtrack is an unreleased version of "Interstellar Overdrive" by Pink Floyd.

***

Maclaine's decidedly more tense, paranoid The End let's us see the city through not only the eyes of a native, but those of a troubled soul. Praised by Stan Brakhage at the time of its release, six vignettes depicting untimely death on different scales are loosely held together by the filmmaker's eerily cultish narration. Strange and unsettling for the nonchalant way it delivers Maclaine's hopeless message, the film plays out at times like a quiet march toward the inevitable.

The Kaplan Brothers

The Universal Sounds of... (1969)

Ed and Richard backed by bassist Jeff Czech and guitarist Scott Klynas.

The Kaplan Brothers (1975)

"Three funky cats, all brothers, having just as much fun on stage as their audience.  Fun is the only way to go when you're with THE BROTHERS.  The Kaplan brother have entertained Lady Bird Johnson and have been the hosts of a one hour nation-wide television show sponsored by the San Antonio World's Fair.  Their diversity and attractiveness have resulted in appearances at concerts with Tiny Tim, The Grassroots, Chet Atkins, Boots Randolph, Serendipity Singers and the Les Elgart Orchestra.  During the last four years, the Kaplans have been playing in such leading rooms as the Pioneer Yacht Resort, Chicago's Marriott Hotel, Chateau Louise Resort, Tobo's of Manhattan, Chicago's Sheraton O'Hare and the Back Room on Chicago's Rush Street.  What kind of sound do the Kaplans have???  Three parts of harmony coming together with a new contemporary sound as well as a healthy golden Oldie Show.  Interwoven voices along with guitar, congo drums and bass blend together in a crisp fresh sound of today that doesn't forget the best of yesterday.  Truly an entertaining show." - Liner notes

Nightbird (1978)

"Nightbird is a desperate nocturnal Spirit seeking any fragment of warmth and compassion it can find. Nursing the broken wings of love, rage and fury.  Nesting anywhere it can find comfort and strength to restore a song from the wounds of it's love so that once again the Spirit can pursue the relentless and dedicated search for the love of life and the life of it's love." - Liner notes

Ed, Larry and Richard Kaplan from Chicago, Illinois
